Sour makes you funny? Or not? We clear up nutritional misconceptions!

A basic, plant-based diet supports the acid-base balance and keeps our metabolism, immune system and hormonal balance efficient. An imbalance can lead to tiredness, exhaustion or problems concentrating. We would now like to clear up the biggest myths that exist around this topic.

Myths and misconceptions about the acid-base balance:

It’s a trend – and it’s also healthy: Anyone who eats a predominantly alkaline diet, i.e. a plant-based diet, is doing their organism good. In this way, we support our acid-base balance to remain in balance. This makes sense because the natural regulatory system ensures that all metabolic processes in our body remain efficient. Should I avoid sour tasting foods?

We think that sour-tasting foods must lead to increased acid production in the organism. But that is a fallacy. Because sour-tasting fruits are particularly alkaline. So if you love freshly squeezed orange juice, kiwis or currants, you’re doing it right. Because these foods, like many vegetables, are alkaline. In this case, acid makes you alkaline – and that’s healthy!

When you diet you automatically deacidify?

Not on a classic diet! Anyone who significantly reduces their calories in order to lose weight is probably familiar with this effect: after a few days, a diet crisis sets in. The weight stagnates, and many people have headaches and don’t feel productive. This is often due to hyperacidity, as so-called keto acids are formed when the fat deposits are broken down. Since this slows down further fat loss, it is helpful to consume alkaline minerals when dieting.

When cooking, alkaline vital substances are lost

You can’t say that in general terms. A fresh vegetable soup still has a high concentration of minerals, especially in the liquid. In terms of acid-base balance, it is healthier than, for example, a slice of bread with cheese. For all foods, the preparation is crucial for the content of vital substances. The gentler the method of preparation – i.e. steaming or cooking instead of boiling for a long time in a lot of water – the higher the proportion of usable vital substances.

Winter is getting closer and closer. A clear sign of this are the gray clouds in the sky, the increasing rain showers and gusts of wind. The sun only comes out every now and then, but we need it to produce vitamin D.
